The Residents of
Bradshaw Street and Spring Gardens, Leyland 1871 - 1963
|
|||||
|
A particular interest of mine is in the residents of Spring Gardens and Bradshaw Street in Leyland, Lancashire, beginning in 1870. My interest in genealogy was first sparked during a conversation with May, my Dad's sister, who mentioned that, during her childhood in the 20's and 30's, there were six or so families, all with the surname Wiggans, living in Spring Gardens and Bradshaw Street. I now have information on these families but have yet to find conclusive information to connect back to individuals shown in the 1891 and 1901 census. ![]() Bradshaw Street and Spring Gardens were built around 1830. Bradshaw Street ran west off Towngate, Spring Gardens continued west from the end of Bradshaw Street. At the junction of the two streets Orange Square, comprising around eight properties, ran in a northerly direction. Initially Spring Gardens only had buildings on the south side of the street, the north side being open land. Later, in the 1960s additional housing, which remains today, was build on the north side. The original buildings comprised mainly 'Step Houses' which have a partly submerged cellar with windows, at pavement level, to allow in light. These cellars were used as workshops by Hand Loom weavers who lived 'above the shop' in the upper two floors. Hand Loom weaving declined in the late 1800s and by 1910 little or no hand weaving took place in the area. Around 1940 Bradshaw Street was combined with Spring Gardens and the houses were renumbered to accommodate the change. I have not been able to find any official details of how the houses were renumbered and so below have made a best guess. In the 1970s the area was redeveloped and the majority of the original buildings were demolished. Much of the site is now occupied by a library although one or two of the original buildings still remain. As far as I am aware, only one Step House remains in Orange Square, the bricked in lower windows still visible from the outside. In the
table below the first column shows house numbers, the abbreviations
BS and SG refer to Bradshaw Street and Spring Gardens. The columns for
census only show head of household and spouse. Electoral Registers show
residents of a voting age, although in some cases I have been able to
add other individuals as a result of information drawn from the registers
of nearby St Andrews Church. You can use your browser's text search
function to search for a particular surname. I would be absolutely delighted
to receive any information you might have on the streets and their residents. |
